最早的“南瓜灯”，其实不是南瓜做的哦。The first “pumpkin lanterns” were not made from pumpkins!
大头菜灯笼Turnip lanterns
在爱尔兰和苏格兰，人们把大头菜（芜菁）、土豆挖空，刻上脸，里面点一支蜡烛，做成小灯笼。In Ireland and Scotland, people hollowed turnips and potatoes, carved faces, and put a candle inside.
换成大南瓜Switch to pumpkins
很多人坐船搬到了美国，发现那里的南瓜又大又软，特别好雕，就用南瓜来做灯，叫“杰克灯”。People who sailed to America found big soft pumpkins that were easy to carve — they made “jack-o’-lanterns.”
南瓜小知识Pumpkin facts
- 南瓜是一种瓜果，肚子里有很多种子，种子炒熟了能吃。A pumpkin is a fruit with lots of seeds. Roasted seeds are yummy to eat.
- 世界上最大的南瓜超过 1000 公斤，比一辆小汽车还重。The world’s biggest pumpkins weigh over 1,000 kg — heavier than a small car!
- 做南瓜灯Make a pumpkin要用刀，一定要请大人来切，小朋友负责画脸和挖瓜瓤。Carving needs a knife — ask a grown-up to cut. Kids can draw the face and scoop the insides.
